Ground Pearl Sample Guidelines

Ground pearls are a very cryptic insect. With so little known regarding their biology it is difficult to accurately sample for this insect. In a Pasture Dieback site, sampling in the middle of the affected area, at the visible boundary (i.e. where dead grass meets ‘healthy’ grass) and approximately 4 m away from the visible boundary may help determine whether this pest is present. After selecting a plant in each of these areas, dig down approximately 30 cm deep. Break up the soil and collect approximately a 500 g sample. When looking for ground pearl cysts keep in mind that they can appear shiny white to yellow to varying shades of bronze or brown. Cysts of the white ground pearl can be up to 2 mm in diameter.
